This is an aerial photograph of the construction of two side-by-side curved bridges that will connect Highway 1 to the north portal of the Tom Lantos Tunnels. Although Devil’s Slide is the name given to a coastal promontory on the San Mateo County coast that is subject to ongoing landslides, the old Route 1 built in 1936 ran just east of the area and was also called Devil’s Slide. In 1940, a major landslide destroyed much of the road, and the route was continually subject to major repair and closures due to slides and rock falls. More than half a century later, the road was closed for good when the Tom Lantos Tunnels opened. The tunnels provide a safer route through the dynamic area.
